Ogun traditional rulers seek removal of council chairman

The traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State have called on the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, to immediately sack the transition chairman of the local government, Femi Onanuga.

Addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta on Friday, the Ojotumoro of Abigi, Oba Olusegun Ogunye, said the transition chairman was not fit for the position.

Ogunye, who said he was speaking on behalf of all the traditional rulers in Ogun Waterside, was accompanied by the Osobia of Imakun-Omi, Oba Kazeem Salami; Onirokun of Irokun Kingdom, Oba Buari Ola Balogu; and Elefire of Ifire, Oba Musa Adeniyi.

The monarch alleged that the embattled chairman failed to respect the traditional institution despite the intervention by the governor and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Afolabi Afuape.

The State House of Assembly had last week confirmed the extension of 18 transition chairmen of the local government councils effective from July 19, 2020, but the confirmation of the Chairman of Remo North, Biodun Somoye, and Onanuga were stepped down.

Expressing satisfaction with the Assembly’s action against Onanuga, the traditional rulers claimed the transition chairman and his mother had insulted the traditional institution of Ojotumoro of Abigi Kingdom.

The monarch however appealed that the governor should not allow Onanuga finish his tenure as the transition chairman of the local government.

“We want him to be totally removed from office so that it’s going to serve as a deterrent to others that there are some institutions that must be respected and that is the institution of kingship.

“We are here to implore the entire members of the Ogun State House of Assembly not to confirm his continuation as the transition chairman.

“We also implore the Ogun State governor not to approve his membership as transition chairman. He doesn’t have any respect for the traditional council.”
