ALGON Knocks Rivers APC over suspension of Council Chairmen

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria ALGON, in Rivers State has taken a swipe at the All Progressive Congress in the state for criticising Governor Nyesom Wike over the suspension of three council chairmen.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by the Public Relations Officer of ALGON and Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government, Hope Ikiriko, in reaction to the position of the APC on the suspension of the council chairmen by Governor Wike.

Recall that a faction of the Rivers State chapter of All Progressive Congress (APC) had in a statement by its spokesperson, Ogbonna Nwuke describing suspension of the chairmen as unconstitutional, thereby issuing a 7- day ultimatum to the Governor to reverse their suspension.

The party argued that the Governor has no power to suspend an elected council Chairman and that he acted outside the dictates of the Nigerian Constitution which recognizes the existence of three tiers of government as independent entities to suspend the Council chiefs.

“There is no section of the Nigerian Constitution which allows the Executive arm of Government  in any State, or a State Governor as head of the executive, to punish elected officials without referring perceived acts of misdemeanor against elected officials at the third tier level to the House which has the power of oversight,” the party said.

But the ALGON had maintained that the suspension of its Chairman and Mayor of Port Harcourt, Victor Ihunwo, and the chairmen of Abua-Odual and Degema local government areas by the Governor was in line with the Rivers State Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018 and the constitution”.

Ikiriko described the action of the APC and  former lawmaker, Ogbonna Nwuke as unfortunate and warned that the Association will not hesitate to deal with anyone who will want to hide under the suspension of their colleagues to cast aspersions on Governor Wike who has provided purposeful leadership in the State.

According to ALGON, the suspension of the three Chairmen is “a correctional measure and warned Ogbonna Nwuke not to bring the crisis in the APC to the PDP.”
